My GG Grandfather, Charles S. Hickey, came to Greene County, Pennsylvania, via Washington Co., PA, and before that, possibly Fayette Co., PA, and as best I know before that, from Albany, New York!
Charles was a person of color, an extremely light-skinned man, and got here around 1862, and stayed here the remainder of his life. It was said he married trustee David Gray's daughter. Where he married her is not known. Who she is not known. He was married when he was in Washington Co., PA. before coming to Greene Co.. It is thought he might have married a "Butler or Butter" in Fayette Co., Pa.. Charles is a mystery to me. Why he came to Greene County, Pennsylvania during the Civil War when other people of color were heading north is a mystery. I know the Hickey family after he got here but nothing on his family before coming here. Charles once owned and lived in the building on Greene Street, Waynesburg, which was the original log courthouse, the first County Courthouse. Charles also ran for Constable, was a barber, a trustee, a steward and a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Waynesburg, Pa.
Charles married Elizabeth Ferrell, daughter of Mary (Stewart) and Daniel Ferrell of Jefferson Township, Greene Co., Pa.. Mary and Daniel are my GGG Grandparents.
Charles S. Hickey, Albany, New York, pre-1850, a man of color... part Native American perhaps? Surname Hickey does appear on Native American surname lists. Now you see my roadblock. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
