[VA] Rock Castle Catholic Schools
Though I am a regular poster to the Main forum, I don't believe I have taken advantage of the State's forum before. Please bear with me.
I am trying to obtain some information on whether two Af-Am Catholic schools are still in existence in Rock Castle, VA. They are St. Francis DeSales Institute and St. Emma's College.
In 1917, my gggf's two children from his second marriage were orphaned when his second wife (Carrie Frye SAUNDERS) died in Newport, KY. (He preceded her in 1910.)
Since my gggf, Oliver Hendrix SAUNDERS, had been a Civil War veteran and was due pension money, many people stepped forward to take in the children (Mildred Olivia and Gifford Frye). It turns out that both successive "foster" parents were unscrupulous. The first obtained a good deal of the children's pension money and absconded. The second shipped them off to those two schools, without paying the tab. They ended up having to work their way through.
I would like to try to write the schools, if they are still in existence, to locate copies of any records that might be held on Mildred and Gifford. Though I have been able to trace Mildred intermittently through the years until her death in 1987 in Cinicnnati, Gifford has been more of a mystery. I have been totally unsuccessful in locating him after 1930, when Mildred wrote to the Dept. of the Interior, on their behalf.
Is there anyone reading this familiar enough with Virginia to give me an idea about the schools? I've had no luck through Google.
