Historian researches families of Lower Richland
Recorded history for historically African American churches, like many others, can be elusive, if it exists at all, since records may have been destroyed, lost, or non-existent.
The Rev. John Allen Middleton, a Columbia historian, genealogist, and author, has made it his personal mission to research and record the history of those churches in South Carolina, especially National Baptist congregations in which he serves as a minister himself. Middleton is also masterful in documenting the lineage of African-American families, in some cases back to Africa and England. Many African American and white families in the Lower Richland area are related, since plantation masters are known to have fathered children with slave women, he said. Descendants still live in the area today.
“As a young man, I became interested in family history, not only mine but also that of others, especially in Lower Richland County.
