Berkeley, Barbados connection examined

There are signs everywhere if you know where to look.

Signs that point to some of the first steps taken by colonists in a young America. Signs that show the spread of the American South.

The Southern culture found in stories like Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind,” and the antebellum plantation life that has come to the personify the American South, began right here in Berkeley County more than 300 years ago.

“While the spread of America’s Southern culture began here in Goose Creek, its roots are found in tiny Barbados,” said Goose Creek Mayor and historian Michael Heitzler. “There is a definite link in early plantation life in Barbados and early plantation life in Goose Creek, and it was from here that it spread west across the American South.”
