I agree it could be a misspelling of the first name. Here is an example, take the actor Lawrence Fishburn. His first name has been written as Laurence, Lawrence and Larry.

For Lawrence E. Knight, III, he is namesaked for his father, who is namesaked for his father. Then the next question would be where does the title Junior come into play?

From the google search that I mentioned, he is pictured in an article found listing him as a founder of Eta Eta Lambda. And, another article about him and his death has him listed as Lawrence Edwin Knight, Jr. So my belief is the author decided how he/she wanted to list his name.

I am yet to contact his family.
