Photos from Springfield, Ohio ca 1918 & 1925
I was searching through some materials for an upcoming presentation and came across some photos given to me by my genealogy mentor, Mrs. Ernestine Garrett Lucas (dec) and thought I would share these two (2) with my AfriGeneas family.
The 1918 basketball team of the Center St. Branch of the Springfield, Ohio YMCA. Until the 1950's Springfield's Y, during the days of de facto segregation, had 'colored' branches (YMCA & YWCA) for the AA youth of the City.
The Men's Sunday School Class of the North St. A.M.E. Church of Springfield, Ohio. This photo was taken ca 1925. The building behind the men in this photo was demolished in the late 1950's as a result of Urban Renewal and the New North St. A.M.E. Church is now located in a residential area of Center St. in the City.

An FYI, Francis "Frank" Reno, of Urbana, Ohio, a 4th great-grandfather of Art Thomas was instrumental in founding an A.M.E. congregation in Springfield, Ohio in 1824. He died in August of 1833 on his way back to Urbana, Ohio following a church service held in Springfield, Ohio.
