Church Records/History NC
I would like to research early church history, beginnings and the first members on two churches in North Carolina. Antoich Baptist Church and the First African Baptist Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina. First African Baptist church was organized October 17, 1867 by the General Association of the Colored Baptist NC convention. My Great Grandfather, a minister at Antioch Baptist church started the Youth Bible Study. I also tried research some information on some of my grandfathers childhood friends; H. V. Brown and R. Christian, both ministers and school principals. Their predecessor was Clarence Dillard (a NC Education Inductee) also a minister and the first black administer of the first black school (School Street School). The land was donated by early Quakers.
Speaking of ministers, another person that I have researched (a possible relative) is A. Grantham. He was born about 1850, quoted as a freed black and minister that founded Piney Grove Church. He died in 1918. This informaiton is recorded in County published genealogy histories. I plan to inquire other family elders more about Piney Grove, Falling Creek, and these ministers. Brown, Christian and Dillard are all deceased. I knew principals Christian and Brown. Both of these men were family friends and spoke of my great grandfather. I wish that I could have received more valuable information and history from them while they were living during my childhood.
Local History: Sherman's Army marched thru this area, battled, destroyed areas and set up camp here in Goldsboro, NC. There is also mention of black troops here as guards. Brogden Township's first elected mayor was mysteriously killed after being elected. History also records this area as Tuscarora Indian lands.
