OK--I'll be 1st. I am a member of the Old Edgefield, SC Afro Amer Genealogy Society. My surnames are Teague,Vance,Pinckney. In this month's issue the newsletter HOMEPLACE, mentioned there is information to be found in white church records that may tell you about members of black churches. Black churches didn't have written records because slaves weren't allowed to read or write, so the only history is oral history. Even today many black churches do not keep complete wrtitten records. How do I go about finding information about members who attended churches. I'm looking specifically at Shaws Creek and Johnston SC between 1860 and 1930. I'm sure my ancestors were active in a church, but I have no idea what the names of the churches could have been. Is there a website or book that gives names of any and all churches in the very old south. I'm also looking for the name of churches in Monroe Ms during the same time period.
