Black Schools

For the 10 years I've been researching, I've always hoped I'd come upon
some pictures of the black schools in the rural community of Hardin
County, TN where my ancestors lived. I never had any luck until I was
perusing the TN State-level records at the Tennessee State Archives
website. I noticed a Department of Education and under that, Department
of Negro Education. There happened to be boxes of--and microfilm of--the
black schools from the late 1930s, 1940s! Much of the work was done
under the Rosenwald Foundation, but nevertheless, I was able to order
and receive pictures of almost every school, including the one my
grandmother attended!

I thought I'd share that story with you, so that you'd consider the
records held at the State level. I had always focused on my particular
county and if I hadn't ventured outside of that and looked at some of
the other government agencies, I would have missed this.
