Re: The Cotton Club
In Response To: The Cotton Club ()
I have just completed Ethel Waters: Stormy Weather, to be published by Scarecrow Press in May 2007. Ethel, of course, starred at the Cotton Club in 1933 and I have dedicated a chapter to this appearance - and her song, "Stormy Weather". My previous books include Sophisticated Lady: A Celebration of Adelaide Hall (2001). Adelaide starred at the Cotton Club in 1934 (Lena Horne was also featured at the start of her career). I knew Adelaide well (she was an expatriate who lived in London from 1939 until she passed away - aged 92 - in 1993) and I worked as a historical consultant on a documentary about her life, also called Sophisticated Lady (1989). In 2005 my book Elisabeth Welch: Soft Lights and Sweet Music was published by Scarecrow Press, and included her memories of going to the Cotton Club with her brother Eddie in the 1920s, and introducing "Stormy Weather" to Britain in 1933. Hope this helps. My books will tell you more! Forgive the shameless plug, but my work is not known in the USA. Kind regards, Stephen Bourne (London, England).
