Greetings Afrigeneas,
I recently had the priveledge of speaking at length with a Monix elder about his life in rural Duncan, MS. He said that when he was little (1940's), he walked 3.5 miles to "Howden Lake" school (not sure about spelling). It was a 2-room building where primary - 9th grade was taught. He remembers that in the winter the older boys were so busy chopping wood to keep the place warm that they hardly had time for any lessons.
Does anyone else have oral or written histories related to this school?
