Jacksontown School Reunion-Lynchburg, VA
For you Lynchburg, Campbell County , VA folks.. ran across an article in the "Chronicle" newsletter of the Campbell County Historical Society about a reunion of the folks who had attended the Jacksontown School in the 30's, 40's, 50's until integration and then it became a Community Center. It is now used as an Art Studio and Community Center run by Parks and Services.
At the October 19, 2013 reunion nearly 50 former students came and shared memories of attending the school and the Community Center. The Campbell County Historical Society and others were there to collect oral histories and other information. There is even a YouTube video of the event (link below)
The history of Jacksontown is long. In 1827 Mary Lynch sold a 30 acre portion of land to John and Phil Jackson, "free persons of color". There were a number of Jackson families and a number of other "free families" living in the community Pinn, Berry, Humbles and Early. Phil Jackson sold his part to John Jackson, after John's death ..the land was given to his daugter Ann (after a Chancery Court case settled in 1871).
Apparently there was a school listed as early as 1922, supposedly a Rosenwald School. Not clear at what happened, but at some point another school was built in the current location in 1934 on 3 1/2 acres purchased by George and Nannie Ferrell, Calvin & Lil Bevely and William and Pearl Finn near Brookville Baptist Church (founded in 1875)
