We have the same issue. One family doesn't like another over something petty that happened umpteen years ago. Funds not handled appropriately, etc. But, one issue is that one side of the family dominated the reunion.

We have 2 sisters that married 2 brothers. And so it made many people double first cousins. Well, one sister’s family has dominated the reunion to a point that the other’s sisters family barely comes. Only about 1 or 2 cousins from that side of the family actually attends. I’m trying to make sure to include everyone with the reunion since it’s always been an ‘everyone’s reunion’. It was never limited to just these ancestors descendents. Their cousins always came to the reunion. But, I guess that’s what happens when you consistently hold the reunion in one city where one family dominates.
