I think it's called let's try to outdo each other (this mainly goes on between the DC and GA factions of the family). The reunion covers several days but the big cost is the "ball" that's on Saturday night. And if you factor in the cost of having to get formal attire for that it's even more expensive.

We might drop by for one event, definitely not the "ball". My maternal grandmother's side of the family is basically spread between NC, GA, and DC. I'm in the NC group and most of the relatives here have said 1) can't afford to go and 2) if going, planning to cherry pick which events we are attending.
