Planning family reunions is never easy, even with excited family members, but the end results are always what makes it worthwhile. When I chaired my first reunion, like you, there were times when I wanted to say, "Forget this." But, I persevered and everything turned out well. Family members got to know each other. Family members met folks they'd never seen before. Family members got reacquainted with kin they hadn't seen in awhile. They learned who they are. They laughed, hugged, sang, rejoiced, and fellowshipped. I even had an elderly family member who travelled all the way from Kansas City, who had been battling cancer, and who attended because she never knew many people in her father's family. She told me, "I will never forget this as long as I live." She had a great time, and all of the stress, anger, and hopeless feelings that I encountered definitely paid off in the end.

I applaud you for taking on such as task at a young age, especially during a busy time in your life. Definitely don't do it alone, and know that your aunt is truly smiling at what you are doing. I am sure she's saying, "Don't give up. Everything will work out. Hang in there. Put on that tough skin." And she's right.

Even if the family may seem unenthusiastic, know that those unenthusiastic ones are NOT the whole family. Keep planning...and praying. Keep the spirit of family togetherness going, even though some may still be in mourning over the recent passings. In the end, everything will work out. One thing's for certain, family reunions are definitely a tradition families should hold on to no matter what. The ancestors are counting on us.
