I think you said it all in your post. Have the family send out another letter expressing the same points. You have limited space and can only accomodate family members. Who could argue with that? But then again, I can't imagine anyone wanting to attend someone else's family reunion, either.
We had the same problem in 2002 and we had to finally tell people that we were not accepting any more registrations for guests. Allen descendants only, due to the limited size of the meeting space. Our reunion is fun and popular, and so many friends/neighbors/in-laws of family members want to join us, but it would kill me to see an Allen descendant having to stand while someone's guest sat down at one of our events. No way.
If it were my family, I would send a letter worded something like:
Hello, Allen Family Member! The reunion committee is thrilled to learn that you will join us for this year's gathering! We're expecting a record turn-out of Allen descendants this year, and to make sure everyone has a fantastic time, we need your help. Please note that due to limited space at our family homestead, we can only host direct Allen descendants at the reunion. Our family is growing by leaps and bounds, and since we're bursting at the seams, we simply don't have the space to comfortably accomodate guests. It's not our intention to offend; it's simply a matter of logistics. Thanks so much for your help. We know you're as excited about our upcoming reunion as we are, and we're looking forward to a great time! If you have any questions, please call Carmen at...
