Family History Discrepancies

Through my efforts to find out about my own genealogy, I have more or less become the point of contact with several families who have intermarried into my ancestry. For our/their reunions, I normally produced an updated genealogy report with facts and dates to be included in the family souvenir booklet. On ocassion I have also produced a 6-8 foot family tree for display. I have met some new relatives who were very forthcoming with information and some who had skeltons in the closet that they were determined to keep hidden. Words cannot express how intriguing this reearch has become but most recently a newly found relative shut me down because I uncovered a fact that confirmed the lineage of a family line that she wants to deny because of this family's hue. Needless to say, I was completely taken aback that in the 21st century that we are still ignoring a part of our history because someone was light-skinned or dark-skinned. I was particuarly surprised because the person in question is a retired professor and prior to my confirming the other party's lineage we had developed a rapport which I uncovered by accident. Later I learned that she just wanted my information so that she could claim it as her own. Has anyone else experienced this type of reaction? History can't be changed no what what we find but this person is now looking to discredit my work.
