Donaldson Roots grow deep in the Big Easy
I am happy to report that the 2005 Donaldson Family Reunion met in New Orleans, LA on August 4-7, 2005 and it was a huge success. WE were able to offer four $250.00 each scholarships as part of our first Donaldson Family Memorial Scholarship Program. The descendants of Andrew and Glory Donaldson of Bulloch County, GA were dragging their feet until almost the very last moment and even with an "early bird special registration fee" they came through under the wire. On June 30th, I collected in cash and checks more than $6,000.00 to cover the reunion costs for our planned reunion activities, which consisted of a reception, afternoon cruise, and luncheon, etc. I knew that they would come through but I had hoped that this time we would be a little bit more on time. I collected another $1,200.00 at the door. We have over 135 family members and friends registered with children from ages 3 months to adults aged 85. The Donaldson's normally have a total of 200 plus but lost a large number to Florida's early school opening. Family drove, flew and trained in from CT, GA, MI, PA, NY, JR, OH, TX, FL, VA, MD and Alaska. The vest thing about this reunion was that we managed to coordinate and pull it off without a "Resident Host." We made good use of the hotel planners and Convention & Visitors Bureau who were a Godsend! Our headquarters was the Embassy Suites Hotel on Julia Street which was walking distance from everywhere we have planned to go. The family went to Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, Hurrahs, and shopped at the Riverwalk Mall. The weather cooperated and was pleasantly hot and hot humid. The family was especially pleased with the full breakfast and daily manager's happy hour at no additional costs. The hotel gave us a great rate of $79 and $89 p/n for a king and double room suite with kids under 18 free. As a result of the increase in our numbers for the reception and cruise the changes were minimal and we still came out in the black. As soon as I got home, I got back on the internet and the phone to contact Embassy Suites in Myrtle Beach, SC as the family wants to continue with Embassy Suites as the hotel of choice in 2007. I don't know where Murphy was, but Murphy's Law didn't show up and for that I was very grateful.
