Lost at Sea

Pettiford family member "Lost at Sea", Nov.1944.

I'm trying to locate NOK (Next of Kin) for Stewart's Mate, Second Class, Odie Bass of Bahama NC. We're trying to update his personal memorial listing. Odie was lost at sea off the coast of Japan along with the entire crew of the USS Scamp (WW ll Gato-class submarine)

Odie (b-1926) was the son of Charlie and Elizabeth Bass (Pettiford). Odie also had a brother, Richard C Bass b-1930

Elizabeth Bass (Bettie) was the daughter of John D Pettiforn b-1867,and Lucy Pettiford (Sneed) of Bahama, NC.

Bettie's sisters were Margaret J (Parker) and Hattie (Bullock)

Bettie's brother was James Richard Pettiford.

Odie's cousins (children of Hattie and Lector Bullock) were Sarah L (b-1912) Johnnie (b-1913) Lector (jr. b-1916) and Pervis Parrish (b-1918) son of Harvey and Hattie Parrish (Bullock)

Most Of the 83 crewman listed on board the USS Scamp are "present and accounted for" with a photo included on their page. A few however are still "lost from our view" with no photo available. (This is not right and we'd very much like to correct this.)

I'm a research volunteer for and I would really appreciate a helping hand. I can see that the "Pettiford family" is a (very) large and wonderful family and I'm hoping some of you might remember Odie and his folks...
