Our 89th Annual Adams Reunion
The descendants of Lewis & Susan Adams had their 89th Annual Adams Reunion celebration this past Labor Day weekend in Columbus, Ohio. I am an Adams descendant, Lewis & Susan are my maternal great-great-great grandparents.
The main event of the reunion gatherings has been held on the Sunday before Labor Day consecutively since 1920.... family history says there were similar events held earlier, but not on a consistent basis.
Our theme this year was honoring our ancestors in Peace and War. A military honor guard performed a flag lowering ceremony and played "Taps" in memory of our deceased family members who served in the military. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to those living members who were present (yours truly included) and to some descendant of an ancestor who served. Ancestors were recognized from every War, Civil War (5), up to a relative who recently returned from Afghanistan.
Another "highlight" was the reading of a proclamation signed by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland declaring 6 Sept. 2009 as Adams Family Recognition Day for the family's "official" 199 year presence in the State of Ohio. (1810-2009)
We also had an "Adams History Scavenger Hunt" contest for the younger attendees. It was a questionaire of 20 questions asking about Adams historical facts.... who, what, where & when that could be answered by us older attendees or found on the the four 3 panel display boards of family history, several "books" & family tree charts that were also on display. First place prize was a 25.00 gift certificate and two runnerup prizes of 15.00 certificates. That was great fun watching the youngsters as they searched for the answers on the displays and interviewing us "old folks".
Sunday evening cousins from Indianapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, Kansas City and the local area gathered at a Jazz Lounge for a Jam Session that featured cousin Meridith Evans and her group Luxury Brown. ( http://www.luxury-brown.com/index1.html ) Three of our musically gifted cousins joined in and shared their talents.
There were approximately 250 family & friends in attendence and the above along with good food, fun and fellowship was had by all. Thanks for allowing me to share a few of the highlights from our 89th Annual Adams Reunion.
