I think it depends on the family rather than the locality. There are at least three branches of my family that have reunions (2 maternal, 1 paternal) biannually. Another maternal branch just started last year. And then there is another maternal branch and another paternal branch in which family members just don't have an interest in getting together, so I don't press the issue since my plate is already full with other reunions. But, I think some families have more of a reunion spirit than others.
