Thanks for the feedback. However, will this create hardships? In my opinion, not receiving money from family members until the day of the event will cause more stress, especially if there is no seed money. Deposits have to be paid, letters have to be sent, many things have to be purchased before the event. Some hotels even require installment payments toward the banquet. We encountered this one year, and luckily, the incoming money enabled us to pay those installments. Also, some hotels require full payment prior to the reunion.
Also, many of us already encounter people not abiding by the deadline; so if you start something once, many will expect it to happen all the time. Even if we had seed money to pay the upfront costs and told family members that they can pay at the door, many will start to do this at future reunions where indeed deadlines are set.
Also, how can people keep an accurate estimation of the expected attendance if family members do not respond beforehand with registration and fees? Even if you instructed family members to give notification that they are attending, and you plan for them, many can easily back out because they hadn't paid anything upfront, but yet, the committee has already counted them in to attend.
I guess I am really wondering how not paying registration fees before the event can really work if there is little to no seed money?
