How to revive a family reunion.
Hello, this is my first time posting here. I was wondering if someone could help me with the following issue.
How do you revive a family reunion after having a bad experience?
I am thinking about planning a possible reunion for the summer of 2009. However, our family had a bad experience at our 2007 family reunion. Over the years we have had many successful family reunions with large turnouts. But in 2007, it was different. The person who was supposed to be organizing our reunion ran off with some of the registration fees our family members sent in for the reunion.
Usually our reunion fees cover the cost of the banquet and the picnic. In the 2007 case, the person who planned the reunion had paid for the cost of the banquet however didn’t have the money to cover the cost of the picnic. Thus, the picnic had to be cancelled. This person claimed that their bank put a hold on their account and they were unable to withdraw the funds to pay for picnic activities. We did not find this out until the day the reunion was supposed to start and the out of town guest had already arrived and traveled hundreds of miles to come to the reunion.
The person who planned the reunion had to tell everyone that the picnic was cancelled and promised to return to family members their unspent portion of the money. But in the end this person only returned some of the funds to some of the family members. Some family members didn’t get any of their money back. Even when family members called to inquire about when their funds would be returned, this person would not answer the phone nor return their phone calls. So the end result is was a bunch of angry family members who are probably skeptical about participating in future family reunions for fear of being ripped off again.
So fast forward to the present date and planning for our 2009 reunion, How do I convince family members that they are not going to get ripped off again? The person that planned the last reunion will have nothing to do with the planning of this reunion. How can I convince them that I’m a more honest person and won’t rip them off like that? I want to take away the bad feelings that were generated by the last family reunion. I want turn this reunion back into something that our family members can feel good about and look forward to attending.
