Believe me, you would have been as welcome as the flowers in May!
This was only the 2nd one I ever attended in my life. I went to the Norris Reunion for the first time in 2006. It was a 2-day affairi, a Fish Fry on Friday night and a Picnic at the same Dude Ranch that Saturday. There were about 80 people on Friday night and there were 200 at the Picnic. I arrived 2 days in advance and my boyfriend didn't join me until Friday night. With the exception of ONE COUSIN, a niece of my great grandmother's I'd NEVER let any of the others in my entire life before.
Kim, my cousin and the reunion coordinator, met me at the airport by the luggage carousel and the only way I recognized her was by a white straw hat she'd told me she'd be wearing but, in her arms were a bouquet of pink valentine hearts wrapped in paper like real flowers and the biggest foil balloon that said "Welcome" on it. I was 47 years old and had never been greeted as well at an airport in my life.
She and her mom had already told me "you've got to stay with us darling" and we did. They treated me as though they'd known me all my life, like a Queen. My money was no good and they refused to let me spend a dime.
The only thing different about that reunion and this one is that we cried a million more tears in 2006 than we did this year. In 2006 it was all so new and we were just so happy to find one another. The other thing that made me a big hit in 2006 is the striking resemblance from myself to my Great Grandma Sadie which many of the older relatives had known. There were 3 or 4 of them who when they first saw me they simply cried over and over "Sadie, Sadie, Sadie" as they hugged me.
This time we still cried a bit because there were so many new family members who attended from the other descending bloodlines but we were all so busy having such a good time laughing.
Don't laugh but, we have already reserved our venue for 2010! It'll be at the C & R Circle Ranch in Marshall, Texas and the ONLY day they had still available for that summer was JUNE 19TH! Can you believe our luck? It's the Ancestors I tell you.
The date is perfect and we're determined to have a Juneteenth Theme for it too!
My Great Grandma Sadie had always told me "you go to Marshall, baby and you just tell them I'm Sadie Norris' Great Granddaughter and they'll treat you like royalty" and she was so right. They are everything that she said they would be.
