Family Reunion Forum
We were one of the last family units to arrive so as we drove up to the lawn dotted with pup tents, children running and enjoying the country air, adults sitting on the porch and adults sitting under the streamer and the balloon decorated car port ,trying to escape the sun in its highest position . My Aunt and Uncle had to drive to meet us at the small town grocery store and guide us to their home nestled in a thicket of woods near Lake Limestone. I had met my Aunt once in person and talked to her on the phone dozens of times , but this would be the first time the family would meet each other. Through my research , taps on the shoulders from the ancestors I reconnected two sisters. They knew of each other ,one never knowing the others name, though knowing she existed and one knowing the names of all her siblings, but being born outside a marriage bond was never embraced , because of decisions of adults. Passage of time, really does not matter because in seconds myself as well as my family were embraced as being their sister, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins. To inherit a family in one day may seem impossible, but the present, past and the future was discussed, and accepted. There was food, games, swimming at the lake, picture taking, scrap booking, bike riding, fishing, telling big fish tales, stumbling in the dark from the cabin to a restroom hoping that was actually a rabbit that scurried across your path, advice giving and receiving, stories of youth , adolescents and adult concerns, men talking of war, experiences and retirement, women sharing child rearing and balancing careers and of a family’s history. A bit of family lore was even established when a 17 month old with a bad case of diaper rash was cured the next day. It must be from the dirt he played in and ate for the first time or was it the well water he drank and splashed in from the kid’s pool in the yard.
