Re: Honoring Family Members

This reunion was held on the campus of the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff-formerly A M & N (HBCU), so we included the importance of education in our ceremony.
I collected as many oral histories on the grandchildren (elders) as possible and during the tribute we celebrated various aspects of their lives within the context of the lives of their grandparents. Their grandfather Elijah Reed, lived from 1843-1940 so many of them were teenagers when he died, so they had fond memories of him.
We kept it simple but within the context of preserving the legacy of the family. It was well received.
On a sad note; we presented nine awards(plaques) and since then, two have passed away--all of them are in their 80's so we count our blessings because they are our link to the past.
Usually I'm asked to give an overview of our family history and I always acknowledge the grandchildren that are living (and present at the reunion).--This torch was passed on to me by the elders. During the 1962 reunion, they began to pass on the story as it was given to them by their parents and grandfather, (Elijah Reed).
