Beaufort SC- Tour Guides
I had answered a query about housing for a family reunion in Beaufort. I haven't seen it posted here so I will briefly give information. I was on a group bus tour in May 2006. The Gullah Festival, a crafts fair, was going on. There are 2 hotels in this city. Do on site visits before you decide to use them. Management has changed . We had 2 black "step on", tour guides. Step On's mean we had our own bus, they met us at our hotel and rode through Hilton Head as our guides telling our bus driver where to go to view the black remaining communities. Information.. Emory and Morris Campbell,

Gullah@hargray.com........They are very good
For Beaufort.. we had another black 'step on'. I do not have his name but he was called Reverend? His family provided a paid meal, for all people on the bus(2 bus)as an an out door Gullah picnic meal on their property after our bus tour with him....this was excellent. Someone will know him. Sorry I didn't have any paper work to pass it on.
We also toured the Island, I believed it was St Helena's Island, contact The Gullah Festival of SC Inc, PO Box 83, Beaufort, SC 29901. A movie was made there about a white teacher who came to teach the children who had never been been off the island and were all illiterate no matter what grade they were in. The teacher's name was MR CONROY and the black teacher who was running it was played by Alfre Woodard. My brain is a little cluttered, so forgive me if I have made mistakes about the black actress name. I'm pretty sure it was her. I suggest you request all information about the areas of interest from the Beaufort Co Black Chamber of Commerce. It may be better for your family reunion to be held in a neighboring community, according to the size of your group. My tour coordinator said the best place to stay in Hilton Head would be HOLIDAY Inn.
