Family Reunion turned out GREAT!
The Wilhoite-Fortune-Taylor-Williams family reunion took place over the Labor Day weekend at a Holiday Inn Express hotel. I am proud to say that it turned out GREAT! The weather was simply gorgeous! The mountainous scenery was gorgeous! I am certain the Lord was thinking of us on this weekend!
More importantly, only ONE crasher. However, I am almost certain it wasn't intended to be as such (just lack of ability to read the notices carefully). Those individuals that we believed who intended to "crash" didn't show. I can only speculate that this was due to the ability to read our detailed notices about badges and donations. But I guess I will never know.
We started our reunion on Friday evening with the Registration committee arriving and setting up later than anticipated. But all in good fun! In fact just about everything ran late...but we still had a good time. The Meet & Greet went well as in time we had the Wall Chart and other displays up for viewing and lite snacks out for eating.
Saturday, was dedicated to the Reunion Program which consisted of: opening in song, the invocation, family history and roll call (we have several branches), family trivia, award presentation, candle lighting, and then the announcements/remarks. The older folks particularily enjoyed speaking during the family roll call. For our next reunion we plan to incorporate "story telling" into the program.
After the program, we enjoyed a catered picnic where families mingled, children played, and everyone enjoyed various activities. A friend of the family DJed the occassion. And the hotel even had a nice pool along with the VAST amount of land! It was simply beautiful!
We ended our reunion with church service on Sunday. This church was built and rebuilt (due to fire damage) by my ancestors. The family have previously erected a tombstone of oldest ancestor behind our ancestral church and so after the service we visited the gravesite (saw other ancestors buried there).
After church, my brothers, sisters, and a cousin also visited our grandparents house (very old now). We wanted our children to see their great-grandparents house which my grandfather built himself (I'm sure he had help).
It was great! Funny...we're looking forward to the planning of the 2009 reunion. :-)
