Hollis, I feel you! In the past our friends always came for free. I'm the one that usually donates items for the reunion. I provide family tree booklets and charts every year free of charge for everyone. I provide a gift for the two oldest people attending, I make all the hotel arraingements and takes care of all the mailings, telephone calls and I also pay my family fee. The guest always wants whatever the family members get. So, being the national coordinator of my family reunion, I made the decision that everyone that attends the reunion must pay. The friends wants to be treated like family, so I treat them like family and let them share the financial responsibilities. The host cities have committees complete with officers and I do let them decide how they want to handle the friends issue. Sometimes the host city doesn't have enough family to help and they end up with friends on the committees. They know how much money they are working with, so I let them handle it. My problem is with the friends that hop on an airplane and fly across the country and wants to attend my reunion for free. We only had one at our last reunion for our banquet (someone's ex-inlaw that wasn't invited). We had tickets for the picnic, no ticket, no plate. We sold ticket for plates and that worked out well.
