Why not employ the locals... They can make desserts as a contribution instead of paying and since they are "close by" that should be easy, have someone (family) be responsible for video taping of the event, another (family) could be responsible for working the registration tables, One could be put in charge of distribution of t-shirts/ goodie bags.. etc. Put them to work and then let them eat and enjoy.
