I am not sure if I understand your question, but are you wanting to distinguish between the African-American BROWNINGS and the white BROWNINGS since both families are still in the area? If the Afr-AM Brownings are still living in the community, and you are doing a community newspaper, then yes, I would include the Browning surname. If you want to distinguish which set of Brownings, try "the African-American Browning Family". Then, there won't be any questions as to which family you are talking about. As far as the "sticky" issue behind this, I am pretty sure that most people in the area know that the black Brownings probably got their surname from the slave-owning ancestors of the white Brownings who are in the area.
