Well now I have another situation:
Folks are still planning on coming, right?
My siblings are out of the planning. My sister-in-law
(who ALWAYS thought our family was crazy)sent the fees
back BEFORE the actual deadline was up. Some people bought money orders and wrote them out to my brother (the treasurer) therefore are unable to cash in their money. Some have already cashed theirs in.
Unfortunately I am NOT the millionaire some may think I am. I don't have the money to pull this off myself. So here is what I was thinking:
1. First of all one of my sisters agreed with me that we didn't give people enough time to send in the funds. We sent the letters out in Feb and made the deadline March 9th. The second one was only extended to April 7th and then the 21st. I never understood why my committee was in such a hurry to get funds over four months before the event.
2. We still have an issue of the hotel rooms.
I was thinking of sending out letters (or maybe calling)to the ones who paid and others who were still wanting to come to let them know that they will still be invited and welcomed. I will let them know that this will not be of the original plans that we had provided but because they still wanted to come, some of us are willing to accomadate them.
I will also stress that they will need to make a hotel reservation (I haven't cancelled the hotel I had originally gotten) because we will not be able to accomadate them in our homes.
Then I will ask for a downpayment to help offset the cost for a picnic. I was thinking of asking for a little more than the original $35 per person, maybe $50 so I can be assured that I have enough for a small picnic. I can make the deadline June 15th or so.
I do understand that this will LOOK like I'm going behind my family's back and going ahead with the reunion but at this point I don't really care. I talked to my 75 year old mother the other day who had not been involved in the actual planning of the reunion. She thought everything was going well until her siblings and cousins called her about it being cancelled. She knows that I am the one who was the most involved with getting it here and is looking to me to do something about getting it up and running again.
Mel had said that my ancestors wanted me to do this. That sent a chill through me because I really really felt that all along. I have even gotten a breakthrough this week by finding my ggggggrandparents' marriage record in the Freeman Bureau. Tell me that's not a sign of my ancestors talking to me! Something is driving me not to stop, I can't.
Any other suggestions about this?
