I feel your pain - been there - and echo Melvin's sentiments.
Change IS hard for folks to understand and accept. Some won't even try to understand. We will register late (VERY late), show up unannounced, and demand to know why we don't have a seat at the table (or a spot at your house cause we can just sleep on the floor). Cultural and lifestyle differences are only the tip of the iceberg as to possible reasons. It is what it is.
If at all possible, hang in there. It will be worth it to enjoy the event with those who do show up. Try to have a plan in place to handle those want to pay on the spot. And, truth be told, if a few are turned away from an event or two because there isn't a seat at the table, maybe a lesson will be learned about the advantages of a timely response.
If the reunion is cancelled, as one was in my case, then it may be even harder to get the family together for a future reunion. There is something to be said for reunion continuity.
