It is wonderful that you are considering attending your family's first reunion. I agree with all of the suggestions that everyone has made and have one caveat to add. Since you say you do not know the hosts or most that would be in attendance, make sure these folks are of the same family tree you are, if that is your specific interest.
I say that because in 1999 we held a MITCHELL-SINKLER reunion and some committee members invited some SINKLER descendants to be on the committee, site unseen. I was unable to connect these people to our branch or any other. Come to find out at the end of the banquet, they were unable to connect to our branch and sat there silently embarrased through the entire affair. Now that does not mean that we were not related somewhere down the line and they were welcome just the same, but it would have nice to address those questions up front and possibly avoided their expense. They did travel far to be a part of this event.
That said, I knowlingly attend reunions of families who may have co-mingled or intermarried with mine or of surnames I've not proved we are related but are led by the ancestors to attend. Sometimes connections are made immediately, sometimes not til later, sometimes not at all. But it has never been a waste of my time.
