Generating More Attendance
In response to Carmen Turner's post:
Thanks Carmen. Based on your reunion success, looks like we are on the right track.
We've had our website in place for several years. That has helped a lot, and helped many to identify themselves within the family. In past reunions, we generally sent out 3 letters within the year, informing everyone of the reunion plans.
We have over 200 people on the mailing list. Also, we've utilized Yahoo Groups to generate a family e-mail list. Like your reunion, there are some branches of the family who have not participated, but we are never giving up. We always welcome all family members with open arms, and we do try to stress how we're having a great time. I think a lot of people have become drained from those old-fashioned type of reunions where there is no activity other than people sitting, eating and talking. We've been making efforts to change the "style" of reunions, and continually looking for unique things to do at reunions, to maintain and build excitement.
I strongly believe in UNITY, especially for our Race. The family unit was basically all our ancestors had during slavery, and many times, they were stripped from that when mothers were sold away from children, sisters from brothers, husbands from wives, etc. I think family reunions are a very empowering tool to bring on more unity, not only within our families, but within our race.
I do realize that many people may have grievances with members of their family that may hinder participation. Some people may even have issues with a parent, and choose not to participate in the reunions on that parent's side. Well, we can't change that, but I hope that there may be some way that we can show people that at reunions, they are not only going to be mingling with known family members they might have issues with, but they are going to get a chance to meet other relatives they never knew existed. And hopefully, new relationships can be formed.
