Family Reunion Scholarships
We're debating an issue about our reunion scholarship and I thought I'd ask for input here.
Should we require scholarship recipients to attend the reunion at which they will receive an award?
Some background: This past year we awarded three $500 scholarships, and only one recipient was present at the reunion to receive her award. That didn't sit well with several members who felt that if the students were going to apply for family money they should at least make the effort to attend the reunion or be involved in some way with the family events. They felt there was a "take the money and run" mentality with the two who didn't show. Other family members said that the recipients should be excused because the cost of attendance may be prohibitive for them.
The scholarship amounts are relatively small right now, but we're embarking on a family scholarship drive that should swell the awards substantially. And of the two recipients who did not show, one sent a thank you card when she received her check. The other has deposited the check but has not communicated with us at all.
What do you think we should do?
