Jone Williams it is a challenge to plan a reunion in a different state. I am in Chicago planning a 2008 reunion in Atlanta. Let me share with you a few things we have found - I have friends in the ATL. The Super8 in downtown Atlanta is about $79 per night - you should be able to negotiate the rate since it is their published rate in the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Guide. I think the plus side of the the Super8 hotel is that it is located in the downtown area (walking distance to some tourist sites) and they allow outside catering (reasonable catering prices have been a big problem for us). The down side is that it does not have a swimming pool and you know that it is HOTlanta. The children love to swim. Also, parking is about $15/day.
We have checked out a couple of Holiday Inn hotels ( Druid Hills in Atlanta and Decatur in downtown Decatur. Druid Hills rate was less than $80/night and kids eat free in the restuarant. Plus they had reasonably priced catering menus. They are in the midst of remodeling. They also have a shuttle bus that will take you to Lenox mall in the Buckhead area which puts you 4 miles from downtown. The Decatur location is nice but their published rate begins at $99 and parking is about $7/day. Both hotels are about 6-8 miles from downtown Atlanta.
The Clarion by the airport gave us a rate of $69/night but I understand that the neigborhood around the airport is not something to look forward to seeing. Make sure you visit www.Atlanta.net. There is a section within that site that shows a list of hotels in the various neighborhoods (Perimeter, downtown, Buckhead etc..) for your review. Information such as the capacity of banquet rooms is included.
We are currently investigating the possibility of staying at the Georgia Institue of Technology in Midtown (which is really downtown). The published rates are $25-$40 per night. Of course there are pluses and minuses to staying on a college campus but it's worth checking out. Go to www.conference.gatech.edu. You must have a minimum of 50 people with your group to qualify.
Also, check out the Wingate Galleria Hotel on Cobb Street and the Emory Inn. I have more information for you but I don't have it with me right now. Please let me know what you find along the way.
We are hoping to find a reasonably priced hotel with a reasonably priced catering menu and free parking. We have found an outside caterer that is truly reasonably priced but my contacts have not performed a taste test yet. I will let you know.
Hey, we can possibly work together. Please call in the evening at 773/401-5664 if you are interested in pursuing a joint effort.
