Allen Family Reunion
I'm back from Nassau where we held the 2006 Allen Family Reunion and I have to report that this was probably the best reunion we've EVER had!
All I could think during the entire experience was that we're so very blessed as a family. It was an amazing time, especially when you consider that we were in the Bahamas, the birthplace of our ancestors. It was like going home, you know?
I flew over a day early to relax and help out if I could. I wound up on the radio doing a morning show with two cousins to promote the reunion. Everyone was so genuinely glad to see us, so happy that we were there.
The Nassau committee really took things to another level, from having batik fabric printed with our name and family island on it, to instituting the Crystal Tomato Awards, to pulling together the trip to the family island of Eleuthera, which was more moving than words can describe. We visited the pier in a quiet little settlement where my great-grandfather and his siblings boarded boats to sail to the U.S. more than 100 years ago. We saw their old homesteads and visited a peaceful little seaside cemetery were several descendants are interred. Meeting the descendants of Susan Allen, for whom we'd previously had only two deceased sons listed, was truly amazing. They were so warm and welcoming, and they fit right in! They wanted to host the next reunion but we figured we'd give them a break for 2008 and give it to them in 2010 instead. Maybe by then they'll have had time to get used to having another 800 or so relatives!
Anyway, I could go on and on here because my heart is so full, but I won't. Instead, if you want to read more about our reunion and view our pictures, visit our website below and click on the 2006 Reunion link. Enjoy - I sure did! ;-)
