One of the standard (accepted) books on parliamentary procedure and/or bylaws is "Robert's Rules Of Order". This book covers almost anything and everything you may want to know about the subject. And yes, it's boring...but, informative.

Most Public Libraries have copies (in the reference section). And the paper back version is not very expensive.

So, if you'd like to read about the "accepted" practices, this may be the book for you.

Yours is a good idea, I think. With bylaws in place, everyone knows the what, when and where of your committee(s) and family gathering policies. Multiple copies of your bylaws should be distributed to help prevent the 'secretary' from being the only person with the document(s).
