Family Reunion Forum

Re: Deciding Next Reunion Location
In Response To: Deciding Next Reunion Location ()

This is very interesting. We started out doing the states counter-clockwise with MS being the starting point since most of the family were born in that state. We started out with 4 states, MS, IL, CA & TX, the rotation order is preset. We are scattered over fortyeight of the fifty states and each year we have another state asking to be the host. In order to host, your state has to be a regular participant in the reunion and the next state in the rotation yeilds their turn, no host state is bypassed twice. EX: in 2005 IL yeilded their turn to FL, it will be in IL in 2007. Normally, this yeilding is done at the reunion, but, the (CA)Bay Area has already yeilded their 2009 turn to Las Vegas, Nevada. Atlanta was asking for 2009, but passed when they heard that Vegas wanted it, (they all want to go to Vegas). The problem comes in when one of these states already in the rotation refuses to give up their turn for a new state, then the coordinators from all the states decide which state will get it. This has happened twice, first time we forgot that our bylaws said that we have to bring the new state into the rotation, second time we followed the bylaws and some feelings were hurt. For the most part, everyone understands that our families are spreading out all over the world and to keep the reunions going, we have to embrace the other states where our families live. Mind you, in my family, it's the young working people who has branched out into other states and they are the ones to keep the families united and the reunions going. That's why we made the rotation decisions a part of our bylaws. The bylaws also state that if the next state in the rotation cannot take it and no one else steps up it automatically goes back to MS
