Promise Land community holds reunion
Herald Staff Reports
Hundreds of present and former Promise Land residents gathered this past weekend for the community’s sixth annual reunion.
The Promise Land community was settled by African-Americans in the late 1860s and early 1870s. It is believed to have once been the largest African-American community in Dickson County.
A festival was held on Saturday and featured food, fellowship, a genealogy workshop and a performance by the Dynamic Dixie Travelers.
The reunion concluded on Sunday with worship services at St. John Promise Land Church. The keynote speaker for morning services was Rev. Thomas H. Van Leer of Woodbury, Minn.
