Welsh Mountain Family Gathering New Holland PA
Our family will gather on the Welsh Mountains September 26, 2015 from 9 am - 3 pm. This has turned into an annual gathering sponsored by the Salisbury Historical Society in Gap Pennsylvania. The Green, Harris, Martin, Nocho, Johnson, Watson, Buzzard, Awl, and allied families lived on the mountains from the 1700's until this century. They owned land but were called thieves and squatters by white settlers. Over many generations they became Tri Racial Isolates, but their racial identity was Negro or Colored. For over 30 years I researched and documented my ancestors who lived in the mountains, and the result is a book, Black Minqua The Life and Times of Henry Green. The book details their trials and tribulations as a people who sought economic independence. These days the land has been confiscated by the State of Pennsylvania and all we have is the history that they left, and their achievements. Henry Green was a participant in the Christiana Resistance and also served in the Civil War along with his brothers and cousins. His fore-bearer Benjamin Green fought in the Revolutionary War and purchased land with the warrant he received. The land that the Greens lived on was theirs from a Warrant given to them by the sons of William Penn. I will be sharing these and many other stories and will have a book reading and signing from Black Minqua (which is available on Amazon.com).
