Re: Florida

() Hi Richard: Your contributions to various Afrigeneas forums are simply wonderful. I read the article by Jerry White regarding voting laws in Florida. Unfortunately, Mr. White got some of it wrong. I've researched the voter registration list for 1908 and found my grandfather, great granfather and various cousins on the list. The Escambia County Voter Registration lists 2000 to 3500 "colored" men out of 7,250. Josiah Walls may have been the first black man elected to Congress im 1870, but according to historian Canter Brown in 1885 4 black senators and 15 black representatives served in Florida. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~crackerbarrel/Public.html Thanks so much for highlighting the long and sad history of voting rights. Too bad Jerry White didn't research all of Florida.
