In Response To: Hamburg Massacre of July 1876 ()
In Ridgley Torrence's book on John Hope, The Story of John Hope, there are reflections of Hopes memories of the Hamburg Massacre. Hope was born and grew up in Augusta, GA which is across the river from Hamburg, SC. Hope was best friends and ally to W.E.B Dubois, a leader in the Niagra Movement, First black President of Morehouse College and Atlanta University, founder of NAACP Atlanta chapter, an expert on Race relations, and activist. He often told students that he knew true racism first hand by saying "Remember, I heard the guns of the Hamburg Massacre."
