Re: George Henry White NC?
In Response To: George Henry White NC? ()
"George Henry White was born on December 18, 1852, in Rosindale in Bladen County, North Carolina. His parents, Wiley and Mary, were slaves. By age 13 he had gained his freedom, thanks to the Civil War, and he spent the next eight years working on the family farm and making barrels while sporadically attending public school. By 1873 he had saved enough money to enroll in Howard University. He graduated four years later and moved to New Bern, where he became principal of the state's only teachers' college for African Americans. He also took up the study of law, and by 1880 he had passed the bar examination and opened a law office in New Bern. At some point he married Fannie Randolph, with whom he had one child; after she died he married Cora Cherry (the sister-in-law of Henry Cheatham ), with whom he had three children."
