Ben Tillman was leader of the red-shirt Sabre Company that participated in the Hamburg incident. He rode this "fame" into the US Senate. One of his Senate speeches is printed in the Congressional Record. It stated "The Black Man must accept subordination or be exterminated. Yes, we shot them, we stuffed ballot boxes. We are not ashamed of it."
