I recently received news of many of the libraries in the New Orleans area. Some of it was VERY GOOD. Contrary to 'rumors', it appears the New Orleans Main branch faired well. Now remember, the main branch is only blocks away from the Superdome. It's basement is over 15 feel below sea level!
Here's a little of the 'news':
"... The basement remained essentially dry... a very small amount of water in one area ...[which] caused no direct damage to records..."
We certainly believe in miracles - when all around was flooding, the basement received 'little damage'. Restoration specialist were finally able to get in and assess the damages "yesterday" - mold being of prime concern I would suspect.
Although many branches were a total loss, the oldest records housed at the main branch are relatively safe (for now).
