AfriGeneas Slave Research Forum Rev. Ishmael Moultrie: A Period After Slavery Posted By: Yvette Hinton
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to share some information pertaining to documents my paternal grandmother had before she passed away back in 1989. She left behind my ggrandmother's birth and death certificate along with so many documents. This include a newspaper article on the history of Rev. Ishmael Moultrie. In 1984 members of Salem Presbyterian Church of Charleston S.C. laid a cornerstone in honor of the churches 117 year history. Its history began with the founder of The Hebron Presbyterian Church, Rev. Ishmael Moultrie. He organized churches in the period after slavery between the years 1865-1869. These churches were in Edisto, Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. Rev. Moultrie was the first black man to become pastor in the Catawba Presbyterian church, as it was called at that time, and the first "untrained man to be ordained in the church. His mission was to teach blacks how to read and write the english language so they will be able to read and understand the bible. He worked with the Propagation of Gospels for years and many black students became leaders and preachers under his teachings. It is not known, the birth or death dates of Rev. Moultrie. The written article was with my grandmother's documents. I believe he could be related to my gggrandfather Jacob K. Moultrie. If anyone has any information about Rev. Ishmael Moultrie, please contact me at vetti90@hotmail.com Messages In This Thread
