Toot, thank you for inspiring me to brush off some things I've re-shelved due to time constraints. Though I can't lift them off the shelves completely right now, I think I should move them up the list and also pick them up every now and then (at least briefly) in the interim.
At least two of the one-room school houses in one of my research counties have been converted to community centers. I was at one, my dad's old school for a gospel music concert last Christmas and the other, my mom's old school, for a fish fry around the same time.
It was excellent to find out that one of my maternal 2nd great grandfathers donated some of the land on which the former was built.
My paternal grandmother was a teacher, in one of those 1-room/2-room schoolhouses. Though I do know the 2 South Carolina HBCUs she attended--Benedict and South Carolina State--I have never pursued her records or anything. To tell you the truth, I'm not quite ready to pursue her records, but I will call my aunt this weekend or next to ask more about her studies.
Thanks again, Toot. :-)
