During the Alabama Community Scholars Institute, the Scholars took part in a
program about traditional music and customs of the Sipsey River Primitive
Baptist Association, an African-American association established in the late
1800s. The Association is a strong conservator of the archaic style of
singing that they call "Dr. Watts." Elder Luther Hicks reminded me that all
are invited to attend the footwashing service at Bethlehem Primitive
Baptist Church on the 2nd Sunday in September.
Bethlehem Church is north of Eutaw on highway 14 West. It sits beside I-59
at exit #40. The footwashing service takes place after the regular service,
shortly after noon.
